Becoming a driver for Lyft is actually easier than you probably think, too! Below, we detail the application process, show you how long it’s going to take before you can start driving, and how much money you can expect to make each week.
Driving for Lyft: Starting the Application Process
Getting the started with Lyft is quick and simple: The first thing you will want to do is head to the official Lyft website. Once there, you simply enter your personal details and click “Become a Driver” to get started.
GETTING STARTED

STEP 1: VERIFY PHONE
Once you get all of your details entered, Lyft will want to verify your phone number, so make sure you enter your cell phone – they’re going to send you a code that you have to enter before you can move on to the next step.
STEP 2: VEHICLE INFORMATION
If you’re planning to use your own vehicle, like most drivers do, then you will need to enter your info now. Lyft vehicles have to be model age 2005 or newer for most states and are required to meet a number of different safety requirements, so not all are going to qualify.
Here’s a brief list of other requirements your vehicle must meet to be used on the Lyft platform:
- 4 Doors
- Fully Functional Engine, Suspension, and Brakes
- At Least 5 Seat Belts
- All Exterior Lights Must Work
- No Body Damage or Dents
- Tires Must Have Good Tread – They Have to Pass the Penny Test
- Windows Must be in Good Shape: No Cracks, Fully Functional
- Wipers Must Work & Be in Good Condition
- Horn Must Work
- Front Seats Need to Be Able to Adjust
- A/C & Heat Must Work
STEP 3: PERSONAL INFO
Lyft takes the safety of all parties involved very seriously, which is why they conduct background checks on all of their drivers. To complete this step, you will need to enter your LEGAL first, middle, and last name, along with your social security number, date of birth, and driver’s license information. They will also need your residential address.
STEP 4: BACKGROUND CHECK
Once you enter your Personal Info, Lyft will get to work on your background check. You can’t drive for Lyft if your background check finds any of the following on your record:
- Violent Crime
- Felony
- Drug-Related Offenses
- Sexual Offenses
- Certain Theft or Property Damage Offenses
More restrictive standards may apply, depending on where you live and where you want to drive. If you don’t pass your background check, Lyft will send you a copy to your email, along with instruction on how you can dispute the results if you wish.
Background checks can take a few weeks to process, so be prepared to wait a bit to get your results back.
STEP 5: VEHICLE INSPECTION
In order to get your vehicle approved with Lyft, your vehicle will have to be inspected by a state-licensed mechanic. This helps to protect Lyft riders, and may also give you the chance to fix any minor issues with your vehicle in order to get approved.
STEP 6: APPLICATION STATUS
Once you have made it to this point, you just have to wait for final approval. If you’ve met all of the other requirements, you should find out soon about when you will be able to start driving and making money with Lyft!
How Long Does it Take to Become Lyft Approved?
In most cases, you should find out whether or not you are approved to drive with Lyft in a couple of weeks. It will also be up to you to complete the vehicle inspection in a timely manner if you want to speed things up a bit. Keep in mind, it can take several weeks to make it through the background check, so that will probably be the step that takes the longest. In most cases, you should find out whether or not you can be Lyft driver in a month or less.
